Processor
The R740xd supports up to two processors from the Intel Xeon Scalable Processor family.
Intel Xeon Gold: This is the mid-to-high tier of the Xeon Scalable family. These processors offer a strong balance of performance, core count, memory capacity, and features (like higher UPI link speeds and more memory channels than Bronze/Silver) suitable for demanding enterprise workloads.
Generation ("2.5 Generation 10"): This terminology is non-standard. The R740xd typically supports the 1st Generation (Skylake-SP) and 2nd Generation (Cascade Lake-SP) Intel Xeon Scalable processors, which are the generations corresponding to the "Gold" series at the time of the server's release.
Memory
Capacity: Supports a large amount of memory, typically up to 3TB of DDR4 RDIMM/LRDIMM, with 24 DIMM slots. It also supports advanced memory types like Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory (DCPMM) for massive capacity (up to 7.68TB total with LRDIMMs) or NVDIMM (Non-Volatile DIMMs).
Storage
This is a major strength of the R740xd:
Drive Bays: It's highly configurable, supporting a large number of drives, such as:
Up to 24 x 2.5-inch drives (SAS/SATA/SSD/NVMe).
Up to 12 x 3.5-inch drives.
The ability to mix and match drive types (NVMe, SSD, HDD) across front, mid, and rear bays for optimized performance and capacity.
